1) DESTINATIONS

SALVADOR de BAHIA is the pulsating heart of Afro-Brazilian culture. I just spent the last week in this vibrant, colorful city. It has incredible architecture, gorgeous beaches, delightful people, and ubiquitous music and drumming all around. Salvador is also the home of Capoeira—an Afro-Brazilian martial art that includes elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality. And, it’s the center of the legendary Bahian Carnival. There are many amazing events happening year round and it is always a great time to visit Salvador.

2) TRAVEL GEAR I USE

APPLE AIR TAGS have been a game changer for me. They allow you to track and find your items! I bought a four-pack and put one in my suitcase, one in my laptop backpack, one in my Ridge wallet, and one on my keychain. That way, if anything gets lost or stolen, I can track it through my phone and find it immediately.
Check out Apple Air Tags as well as the rest of my travel gear here.

3) WHAT TO WATCH

WRITING WITH FIRE is the first feature-length Indian documentary to be nominated for an Oscar. It’s the incredible true story of India’s only independent newspaper run entirely by women, largely from India’s oppressed Dalit caste. It shows the stunning bravery of these female journalists who take great risks to document human rights abuses and oppression with remarkably few resources. The film shows how they have used journalism to challenge the powerful and create some significant changes. Everyone should see this film. Watch the trailer here.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of The Maverick Show?

Last week I interviewed Diva Green, the founder of “I Got Your Black”. She talks about her Panamanian background, navigating her Afro-Latina identity, and serving the Black community through travel. Diva explains how and why she created the LatinX Travel Guide for New York City, the Black Guide to Havana, Cuba, and the trips she now runs for travelers to immerse in Afro-Mexican culture. Finally, Diva gives tips on navigating anti-Blackness globally, and being in solidarity with other marginalized groups while traveling. Listen to the episode on your favorite platform here.
