What Really Happens When People Cross Borders?

Hear Honest Conversations on What Travel Teaches Us About the World and Ourselves

The Maverick Show is a long-form global travel podcast featuring stories that are funny, moving, and deeply human. Each episode explores how travel shapes who we become in a complex and unequal world—and what it means to find connection, home, and meaning beyond borders.

Hosted by Matt Bowles, a full-time world traveler since 2013, the show features intimate, unfiltered conversations (often recorded over a bottle of wine) with digital nomads, diaspora storytellers, worldschooling families, and human rights advocates.

Episodes focus on the human stories behind global travel and the personal journeys navigating culture, place, identity, power, and belonging—not just geographically, but emotionally, socially, and politically.

If you’ve ever felt that travel changes you in ways no one talks about, you’re in the right place.

What Makes The Maverick Show Different from Other Travel Podcasts

Imani Bashir in Washington, DC

The Maverick Show isn’t a podcast about where to go on vacation or how to “hack” travel. It’s about what we learn and who we become when we move through the world.

Instead of surface-level destination talk, the show creates space for deeper conversations about identity, culture, power, and belonging, told through personal travel journeys.

Episodes are recorded around the world, often in homes or apartments over a shared bottle of wine. The result is an atmosphere that’s relaxed, honest, and unguarded, where guests can reflect openly on their experiences and the worlds they move through.

On the show, you’ll hear:

  • Voices often marginalized in mainstream travel media, including women, Arab and Muslim travelers, Black and Brown digital nomads, Desi and Latinx travelers, immigrants and refugees, queer travelers, and people navigating life across cultures and identities.
  • Honest reflections on power, privilege, and belonging, alongside joy, humor, and unforgettable moments on the road.
  • Travel as lived experience, not just movement—full of context, memory, nuance, contradiction, and transformation.

This is travel storytelling that values depth and curiosity.  It treats travel not as escape, but as a way of better understanding ourselves and the world we share.

About the Host, Matt Bowles

Matt Bowles is the creator and host of The Maverick Show and has been a full-time world traveler since 2013.

Raised Irish-American, he went from hip hop DJ to nonprofit advocate to remote entrepreneur to minimalist world traveler and podcaster. He left Los Angeles in 2013 and has been slow-traveling the world with carry-on luggage ever since.

After earning a Master’s degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution, Matt worked in nonprofit advocacy until an unexpected job loss at age 30 prompted him to pivot. He went on to co-found Maverick Investor Group, a fully remote real estate brokerage that helps people buy cash-flowing U.S. rental properties from anywhere.

Running a distributed company gave Matt the freedom to live and work across dozens of countries while building a life centered on global travel, curiosity, and cross-cultural connection.

While traveling, Matt began meeting people with extraordinary stories—digital nomads, artists, activists, parents raising children across borders, travel journalists and others navigating life between cultures. In 2018, he started recording long-form conversations with them around the world, often over a shared bottle of wine. Those conversations became The Maverick Show.

As a host, Matt approaches each interview with curiosity and care, creating space for real conversations where guests can reflect openly on travel, identity, belonging, and the experiences that shape us when we move through the world.
