GAZA is a documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and now has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It brings us into one of the most isolated places on the planet and reveals a world rich with eloquent and resilient characters. It offers a cinematic and enriching portrait of a people attempting to lead meaningful lives against the rubble of perennial conflict. I’ve been to the Gaza Strip twice in my travels and I spent time with local people there, played with the children, and ate meals with Palestinian families. We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda is a New York Times bestselling book that I read 20 years ago, and then re-read last year right before I visited Rwanda for the first time. I spent a full day at the genocide museum and memorial, which is built at the site of a mass grave of people that were killed in the 1994 genocide. Some 800,000 people were exterminated in just 100 days and, in this book, Philip Gourevitch frames the genesis and horror of Rwanda’s “genocidal logic” and explores how a country composed largely of perpetrators and victims could create a cohesive national society. It tells us much about the struggle everywhere to forge sane, habitable political orders, and about the stubbornness of the human spirit in a world of extremity.
