CHOCQUIBTOWN is a Colombian hip hop group from El Pacifico that Eileen Ivette put me onto when I interviewed her on Episode 333.  They fuse hip hop with traditional Colombian musical genres like Latin jazz, salsa, and Afro-Latin rhythms…and I bang them all the time now!  Lyrically, they discuss Afro-Latinx identity and taking pride in being from Colombia’s Pacific region. JAPANESE WHISKY BARS.  Each time I go to Japan, hitting a whisky bar is always a top priority. While Japan has been producing whisky for 150 years, it has only been in the past 25 years that the world really took notice, as Japanese whiskies began entering and winning top honors at international competitions and beating major Scottish distilleries in blind tastings. The quality of the whisky is incredible (and you can certainly order it around the world), but the magic of spending an evening at a whisky bar in Japan is unmatched! 

LATIN AMERICA TRIED TO ELIMINATE BLACK PEOPLE–AND FAILED is a 10 minute “hidden history” video on AJ+ that was written and narrated by Eileen Ivette.  I interviewed Eileen on Episode 333 about her behind the scenes experience in the research and production of this video that has now garnered nearly 10,000 comments!  Watch the video on AJ+ Here.

Last week I interviewed Eileen Ivette about Afro-Colombian history, diaspora identity, and the impact of 3 trips to different regions of Africa. She talks about her viral video on “How Braids Became a Secret Map for Escaping Slavery”, the impact of going to an HBCU, and her trip to China with 15 other Black students.  Eileen then tells the story of traveling to Sierra Leone to meet her boyfriend’s extended family and document some oral history.
