– Matt

1) DESTINATIONS

ACCRA, GHANA. On my first trip to West Africa in in 2019, I spent the month of June in Ghana’s beachfront capital city of Accra, and it won my heart entirely. I went back in 2022 for “Dutty December” — filled with round the clock Afrobeat festivals, parties, galas, and a legendary New Year’s Eve celebration. This is, hands-down, one of my favorite cities in the world.

2) TRAVEL GADGETS I USE

WACACO PICOPRESSO. I always travel with a small, portable espresso maker. Currently my favorite is the Wacaco Picopresso, which makes real espresso with 16 bars of pressure. And, it uses a bicycle pump technology so it doesn’t require electricity. Any place you can get boiling water (a campfire, a hotel room, an airplane, etc), you can make a real espresso. I’ve found it especially handy in super remote destinations like Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or the Salt Flats in Bolivia! Check out the Picopresso and all of my travel gear.

3) WHAT TO WATCH

BLACK TRAVEL ACROSS AMERICA. I interviewed Martinique Lewis on Episode 152 of The Maverick Show, and her latest Nat Geo documentary film is called “Black Travel Across America“. She visits both historically listed Green Book destinations and modern Black travel destinations. It’s really dope and highly recommended! You can stream it on Disney+ and Hulu.

Did you Listen to Last Week’s Episode of
The Maverick Show?

Last week, I interviewed Lumjana Shehu who told her story of growing up as an Albanian refugee, crossing borders in the back of container trucks, having her father imprisoned for being undocumented in Canada, and eventually being deported back to Albania with her family. Today, she empowers Albanian youth to work remotely, self-direct their education, and create their own future. You can stream the episode on all podcast platforms or directly on The Maverick Show website. A new episode is dropping today!
