GRINGO TAX mobilizes gringos and foreigners to engage, redistribute resources, and support more just communities across Mexico City. This project responds to increased inequalities locally connected to displacement, gentrification, tourism, increased cost of living, income disparity, cultural shifts, and the influx of affluent newcomers.  Rooted in solidarity, critical reflection, and collective action, I learned about Gringo Tax from Lolly Spinder during our interview on ep 343 you can follow Gringo Tax on Instagram or learn more and donate on their website here.

SUMMER OF SOUL is Questlove’s Oscar-winning documentary that is part music film and part historical record, created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. 3 SUNS IN THE SKY is an article by Yulia Denisyuk (who I interviewed on episodes 282 and 283) about the history and struggles of indigenous peoples in Russia, including her own Chuvash people. She describes how Russia’s centuries-long suppression of Chuvash language and culture is why she neither speaks the language nor knows its rich traditions, beliefs, and mythologies.  Though she is now working on re-learning and re-claiming her culture. Catarina Rivera talks about traveling the world as a deafblind Latina–including salsa dancing and sumo-wrestling–and becoming a disability advocate. She reflects on growing up in an immigrant home, debunks common misconceptions about deafblind people, and offers tips on how non-disabled people can be better allies. Catarina shares stories from Spain, Argentina, Korea, Montreal, Japan and the trip she led to Portugal for disabled travelers.  Finally, she reflects on her activism and how she built a remote company to smash disability stigmas.
