The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). I interviewed Paula Gean on episode 345 who is a Chicago-based immigrant rights activist and when I asked her how people could support immigrant populations that are being targeted in the U.S., she recommended donating to ICIRR which builds power with over 100 member and partner organizations representing diverse immigrant and refugee communities. DAKAR, SENEGAL is one of my favorite cities in the world and I’ve been 3 times.  It is widely regarded as the fashion capital of West Africa and the outdoor fitness culture along the beach is second only to Rio.  I plan my days around the perfect sunsets that happen each evening, when you can drink cocktails on the beach and watch the local surfers.  You can also eat the freshest fish, literally caught right out of the ocean and cooked for you on the beach.  The nightlife is incredible and the people are exceptionally kind.  This is Maya, a local artisan who always makes me laugh, so of course I buy her crafts! 🙂 

Last week I interviewed Paula Gean about her experience being born in Colombia amidst the cartel violence of the 1980s, immigrating to Chicago and living in poverty, and then growing up in East Texas.  She gives tips on how to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities in the U.S. and then describes her magical first trip to Botswana.  She reflects on the similarities with Colombian culture, and shares how she co-founded Africa Culture Journeys to offer Botswana camping safaris in a way that empowers and benefits local people.
